"Down River"

If you were Tally, would you ask the warden to make you pretty?

If I were Tally I would probably ask the warden to make me pretty because her best friend, Shay, has already changed and that's were she truly belongs. She has wanted it for so long, I think she should change.

Blog Post #51

  • Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

I don't think Tally will regret it because David should like Tally for who she really is. I don't think it would be fair if David just ditched Tally because she finally told the truth. I think David should still trust and like Tally.

Personally, i would have forced the cure, because I would have wanted that persons normal life back. I would never let my friend suffer with brain lesions, or anything like it.

if you were Shay would you get the cure? Why or why not?

If I were Shay I would get the cure, with no doubt. I mean, you could have the best of both worlds... Not having lesions, and still keeping your beauty. But, there is still a slim chance of something messing up.

Blog Post #48

"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancer or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

  • I think this quote is very sad. I think this, because Tally and Shay were good friends for so much of the book, and it ends up like this. I wish they were back to their normal selves again.

Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?

  • Tally finally realizes that Shay has turned pretty.
  • Tally and David help other smokies get free, along with Davids parents, Maddy and Az.
  • Everybody escapes in the elevator that leads to the roof.

  • KICKER- David finds out that his dad, Az, had died.

I think this quote has a deeper meaning in the story. This quote more than likely is describing the torture rooms.

Radiology- A way to see the fixes in the body.
Neurology- The room that changes the whole nerve system in a body though a painful process.
Magnetic Imaging- The room that some how changes the face, and appearance up though magnets.
Operating theatre two- a torture room.

  • In this chapter a few uglies go to new pretty town to do a "trick." The make the words"The smoke lives" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be, and why?

My message would be "Be happy with what you have." The reason I picked this is because I hear people talking about things they don't have, and I never hear them talk about appreciating what they do have.

Blog Post #44

  • The uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beggining of the book.
  • When you compare her to these uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

Tally has changed tremendously since the beginning. She has changed because she is very mature, and more adult-like or responsible. I think just the fact that she has been hanging around different people has changed her way of life.

I believe that Tally's plan will work because she has had future experience with jumping and getting away. I think the fact that she has now realized what she had done to the smoke it truly driving her. I don't think Tally is crazy, because she is doing what is right to her.

David and Tally describe the rusties as a psyco, crazy place, but the truth is there is crazy people everywhere. Some of the Rusties aren't crazy at all.

One of out weaknesses in our society is the financial crisis in our economy. The crisis started in the banking system and is hurting us pretty bad.

One of the major problems in the New Pretty Town society is they guaranty a great life but they manipulate your mind to make you think that.

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. (i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post the information and cite it.

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the U.S Gulf Coast on Aug. 29 2005, destroying beachfront towns in Mississippi and Louisiana, displacing a million people, and killing almost 1,800. When levees in New Orleans were breached, 80% of the city was submerged by the flooding. About 20% of its 500,000 citizens were trapped in the city without power, food or drinking water. Rescue efforts were so delayed and haphazard that many were stranded for days on rooftops and in attics before help arrived. The city became a toxic pool of sewage, chemicals, and corpses, and in the ensuing chaos, mayhem and looting became rampant- about 15% of the city's police force had simply walked off the job. The 20,000 people who made their way to the superdome, the city's emergency shelter found themselves crammed into sweltering and fetid conditions. At a second shelter, the convention center, evacuees were terrorized by roaming gangs and random gunfire. Relief workers, medical help, security forces, and essential supplies remained profoundly inadequate during the first critical days of the disaster. A year after Katrina, the population of New Orleans was less than half of what it was before the storm hit. Nearly half the city's hospitals remained shut and half its doctors had moved out of the area. Electricity was restored to just 60% of the city. Tens of thousands of working class African Americans, who were scattered around the country after the storm, were unable to return because neither housing nor jobs awaited them. Rebuilding efforts have been chaotic and slow- there is currently no master plan for rebuilding large-scale infrastructure. Still, more than a third of New Orleans homeowners whose houses were flooded have taken out building permits, providing a sign of hope: Slowly and painfully, the city is rebuilding itself.

  • Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable. What was the loss in the process?

I think it is ironic that Tally felt accomplished because she was one of the few that hadn't been captured, even though she was truly the main reason Special Circumstances attacked.

Tally lost a great number of her friends from the smoke, that were captured by Dr. Cable.

Tally is one-hundred percent NOT amazing. I believe this because she let the whole Smoke down so she could become pretty. Tally should be very disappointed and guilty for what she did.

Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or an enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do?

Is this the climax of the book? Explain why, or why you don't think so in a few sentences.

  • I believe this chapter is by far the climax. I say this because this chapter is when Tally makes her final choice of the true path which she will go down. She could have either ran away from the special circumstances, or she could have retuned to New Pretty Town and become pretty. This was the most suspenceful part because she could have gone both ways.

How would you want to change physically and mentally if you were pretty? (Think... habits, intelligence, and physical attributes.)

  • I believe this shows how people in the city, such as Tally, don't usually see parent and son together. It shows that they normally only see brother, and sister by each other. I think this problem needs to be solved.

I think being pretty is what you become after the surgery.... Mean, spoiled, rude.

  • The Rusty Ruins are the remains of the city when everyone was ugly. During this time, the universe was very chaotic and cruel. For example, if you weren't tall, strong, or smart enough you would be treat very poorly.

  • To me peer pressure is when your friends, family etc. push, or work you to do something you don't really want to do.

Example of peer pressure:

"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun."...
"This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves"

  • I think Tally and Shay should stop worrying about their appearence, and just have fun with their lives. Tally ans Shay should move on and explore the world.

"Everyone judged everyone else based on their appearence. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed one another over stuff like having differt skin color."

  • I beleive that this quote is very, very unfair. Just because someone is taller, or racially different, doesn't meen that they should have unfairness in their world. Also, just because you dont look like someone, that should decide your future.

"It's the only way to make people equal." (becoming pretty)

  • This quote to me, isn't neccisarily correct. I say this because, if you change your outter looks, that might change your appearence, but it doesn't change who you are on the inside.

Blog Post #5

"Best Friends Forever" p.11

  • I think New Pretty town advocates bungee jumping because it is an easy way to escape danger such as fires, land slides, earthquakes, etc.

  • "Bungee has quite an old origin. The idea of this way of jumping comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife ans she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ancles with Liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the women jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what her wife had done. So he died but the women survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they had began to practice such jumps in case they got in similar situations. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvests and also for proving manhood. Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the first of April (fools' day) 1979 when group of people from the oxford University Dangerous sport club, impressed by a film about "vine Jumpers", jumped from 245-Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Using nylon braided, rubber shock cord instead of vines, and dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump. The enthusiasts promptly were arrested for this. But at least hit the world press the next day. The new adrenaline mania has been started. The D.S.C performed many other jumps, including one off the Golden Gate Bridge. In early 1988, A.j Hackett and Chriss Allum, opened the first commercial jump site in Ohakune, New Zealand. Hackett also made a great commercial show in 1987 when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

As part of the site publicity, Hackett performed an astounding bungee jump from the Eiffel Tower! Nowadays there have already been alot of towers, cranes, bridges and even hot-air balloons serving as platforms for jumping and bungee is the simplest and easily understood of the aerial extreme sports."

  • Peris- Male, he is considered a pretty, and he is friends with Tally, an ugly.

  • Personally, I don't think Tally and Peris's friendship is strong enough. The reason I say this is because, if Peris was a true friend with Tally, then Peris would obviously make time to see Tally. For example, when Tally escaped from the party, Peris could have left with her instead of leaving her on her own.

  • I think Tally decided to wear a mask to the "white tie party" because she didn't want anyone to see her face. Also, Tally was probably worried about "pretties" making fun of her for being ugly.
