"Down River"

If you were Tally, would you ask the warden to make you pretty?

If I were Tally I would probably ask the warden to make me pretty because her best friend, Shay, has already changed and that's were she truly belongs. She has wanted it for so long, I think she should change.

  • Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

I don't think Tally will regret it because David should like Tally for who she really is. I don't think it would be fair if David just ditched Tally because she finally told the truth. I think David should still trust and like Tally.

  • Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the cure? Why or Why not?

Personally, i would have forced the cure, because I would have wanted that persons normal life back. I would never let my friend suffer with brain lesions, or anything like it.

if you were Shay would you get the cure? Why or why not?

If I were Shay I would get the cure, with no doubt. I mean, you could have the best of both worlds... Not having lesions, and still keeping your beauty. But, there is still a slim chance of something messing up.

"Get away"

"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancer or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

  • I think this quote is very sad. I think this, because Tally and Shay were good friends for so much of the book, and it ends up like this. I wish they were back to their normal selves again.

Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?

  • Tally finally realizes that Shay has turned pretty.
  • Tally and David help other smokies get free, along with Davids parents, Maddy and Az.
  • Everybody escapes in the elevator that leads to the roof.

  • KICKER- David finds out that his dad, Az, had died.

  • "Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read softly."Operating Theatre Two."

I think this quote has a deeper meaning in the story. This quote more than likely is describing the torture rooms.

Radiology- A way to see the fixes in the body.
Neurology- The room that changes the whole nerve system in a body though a painful process.
Magnetic Imaging- The room that some how changes the face, and appearance up though magnets.
Operating theatre two- a torture room.

  • In this chapter a few uglies go to new pretty town to do a "trick." The make the words"The smoke lives" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be, and why?

My message would be "Be happy with what you have." The reason I picked this is because I hear people talking about things they don't have, and I never hear them talk about appreciating what they do have.

Blog Post #44

  • The uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beggining of the book.
  • When you compare her to these uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

Tally has changed tremendously since the beginning. She has changed because she is very mature, and more adult-like or responsible. I think just the fact that she has been hanging around different people has changed her way of life.

"Familiar Sights"

I believe that Tally's plan will work because she has had future experience with jumping and getting away. I think the fact that she has now realized what she had done to the smoke it truly driving her. I don't think Tally is crazy, because she is doing what is right to her.

  • How do David and Tally describe the rusties? Is it accurate?

David and Tally describe the rusties as a psyco, crazy place, but the truth is there is crazy people everywhere. Some of the Rusties aren't crazy at all.

One of out weaknesses in our society is the financial crisis in our economy. The crisis started in the banking system and is hurting us pretty bad.

One of the major problems in the New Pretty Town society is they guaranty a great life but they manipulate your mind to make you think that.

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. (i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post the information and cite it.

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the U.S Gulf Coast on Aug. 29 2005, destroying beachfront towns in Mississippi and Louisiana, displacing a million people, and killing almost 1,800. When levees in New Orleans were breached, 80% of the city was submerged by the flooding. About 20% of its 500,000 citizens were trapped in the city without power, food or drinking water. Rescue efforts were so delayed and haphazard that many were stranded for days on rooftops and in attics before help arrived. The city became a toxic pool of sewage, chemicals, and corpses, and in the ensuing chaos, mayhem and looting became rampant- about 15% of the city's police force had simply walked off the job. The 20,000 people who made their way to the superdome, the city's emergency shelter found themselves crammed into sweltering and fetid conditions. At a second shelter, the convention center, evacuees were terrorized by roaming gangs and random gunfire. Relief workers, medical help, security forces, and essential supplies remained profoundly inadequate during the first critical days of the disaster. A year after Katrina, the population of New Orleans was less than half of what it was before the storm hit. Nearly half the city's hospitals remained shut and half its doctors had moved out of the area. Electricity was restored to just 60% of the city. Tens of thousands of working class African Americans, who were scattered around the country after the storm, were unable to return because neither housing nor jobs awaited them. Rebuilding efforts have been chaotic and slow- there is currently no master plan for rebuilding large-scale infrastructure. Still, more than a third of New Orleans homeowners whose houses were flooded have taken out building permits, providing a sign of hope: Slowly and painfully, the city is rebuilding itself.

  • Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable. What was the loss in the process?

I think it is ironic that Tally felt accomplished because she was one of the few that hadn't been captured, even though she was truly the main reason Special Circumstances attacked.

Tally lost a great number of her friends from the smoke, that were captured by Dr. Cable.

"Is David right?"

Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think she should feel guilty? Why or why not?

Tally is one-hundred percent NOT amazing. I believe this because she let the whole Smoke down so she could become pretty. Tally should be very disappointed and guilty for what she did.

"Run"

Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or an enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do?

I personally think the voice in the dark cave is David, because David also could have run to the cave to get away. I think Tally will be very happy, an kiss him.

  • Explain what preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?
Preservation is keeping something safe. Preservation is probably the most important thing, because you need to be safe. I would lie because defiantly. For example, if someone was going to kill you and they said if you are from California I will let you live, I would say I am from California.

Tally had changed her mind about the smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?

At this point, Tally has known that she made the wrong decision about the smoke. Now, Tally is trying her absolute hardest to escape from the Special circumstances. Tally has made her final move, and has picked the Smokies.

Is this the climax of the book? Explain why, or why you don't think so in a few sentences.

  • I believe this chapter is by far the climax. I say this because this chapter is when Tally makes her final choice of the true path which she will go down. She could have either ran away from the special circumstances, or she could have retuned to New Pretty Town and become pretty. This was the most suspenceful part because she could have gone both ways.

"What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful."

Name one person in your personal (home) life and one in your academic life ( you may leave them nameless if you wish.).. What makes that person beautiful.

  • Definitely, my brother. I say this because we have several things in common. we argue sometimes, but we get along alot more. With out him I would be bored ALOT! In my academic life, it would be Colin because we have been friends for a long time, and we relate in several ways... Mostly everything!

"Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look, it changes the way you think."

  • I believe that when you get the surgery, you change physically and mentally. In other words, they don't just change your appearance, they also change your thinks process.

How would you want to change physically and mentally if you were pretty? (Think... habits, intelligence, and physical attributes.)

  • If I were able to change physically and mentally, I would want to be smarter than what I am. I really don't want to many changes, because that is what makes me, me. If I could change anything, I wouldn't be the same person any more.

" But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked the same. But not parents and children? That's weird."

  • I believe this shows how people in the city, such as Tally, don't usually see parent and son together. It shows that they normally only see brother, and sister by each other. I think this problem needs to be solved.

I think being pretty is what you become after the surgery.... Mean, spoiled, rude.

"Bravery"

Imagery- "Tally nodded, feeling the cold pendant against her neck and remembering her promise to Shay." pg. 245

Personification- "She thought of the orchids spreading across the the plains below, choking the life out of other plants, out of the soil itself, selfish and unstoppable." pg. 244

Simile- " Like walking poison, she killed everything." pg. 244

I don't think it requires bravery, because Tally should trust David for this. David wouldn't do it if it were to have a negative effect.

I believe that Shay definitely has the right to be jealous of Tally, because Tally stole David from Shay. I mean, if you were Shay ask yourself... Would you be jealous if someone came at random and took your boyfriend that you have know for years? Personally, I would be furious with Tally if I were in Shay's shoes.

For Christmas I got a very top of the line wakeboard, and everyone wanted to use it. It got very annoying, but thankfully it has stopped recently because wakeboard season hasn't started up yet, but I'm sure looking forward to wakeboard season!

It would have been so much easier for Tally to have activated the pendant when she first got there because now, Tally has already been trusted by Shay and David. Also, If she would have activated the pendant earlier before she got used to the "Smoke" it would have been easier because she wouldn't have cared about the Smoke as much.

"How did they manage? Without any doctors, I mean." "They are doctors." "Huh. But... hang on. Doctors? How old were they when they ran away?""Old enough. They weren't uglies anymore.

I think that David's parents were having a great, and fun life, but obviously something happened because they ran away. I believe that something went terribly wrong in either a surgery or in their general lives. I say this because if you were to put yourself in their shoes, and you were making loads of money, why would you run?
